Intro to Me

Hello! My name is Gabriela, but I go by Gabi. In this post I will just briefly provide  my backstory, and I apologize if it is not that thrilling a tale. I am a first year student who has made a great trek from my home city to here, Vancouver. I come from Seattle, WA in the states. It is a magical place that is very similar to Vancouver. My parents are from Puerto Rico, which is in my humble opinion one of the most amazing places in the world.

In conclusion, my life revolves around food, family, espresso, Puerto Rico, politics, and Seattle.

I grew up listening to three different types of music: rock (i.e. Journey), salsa (i.e. El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico), and classical. Listening to salsa music was a way of connecting to Puerto Rico while living in Seattle, WA—for both my parents and for their children. It is interesting then that a part of Puerto Rican, and Latin American, identity is a genre of music that has both European and African influences. It goes back to what Latin American identity actually is, and who owns it. Music—something that is considered an important part of any culture—has become widely distributed and consumed. Response to Theories of Mixture III: Hybridity

Hybridization describes the cultural mixing that occurs in Latin America, and that process is a result of modernization. Latin America remains inundated with new influences as development spurs global communication and urbanization creates more space for people to access the global market. Hybridization started and created mestizaje, but the process continues and there are still more influencers being introduced. As Latin America becomes more modern, it gains more access to the global community. It is a beneficial relationship (i.e. Latin America and the global community’s relationship) because it means more access to information, technology, and goods. In some ways this improves the national market and provides locals with more resources, and in other ways this globalization can exacerbate the pre-existing inequalities and chip away at the local culture. The People

My Message and A Celebration of the Monster chart two different perspectives of the masses and of uprisings. My Message sees the hope and the power within the people, which are necessary to Perón's cause and her movement. Evita Perón does not back away from stating that she hopes to move people to act: “I want to incite the people. I want to ignite them with the fire of my heart.” (30). In her eyes, the people are an important part of the nation and her cause. She relies on the people, on the masses, and she even critiques those who do not join the fight. In My Message , the people are seen as influential and good in the way they provide to the fight, by giving a reason and a cause to fight for. The people, not the elites, deserve to be heard and listened, at least in this text, and this view of the people as good and reliable contrasts with the way that A Celebration of the Monster portrays the people (or the masses).
